In How to Prepare Bear, Wisniewski explores what survival and celebration mean. In one voice, there is celebration of love and the self. In another, there are dangers and terrors to which silence is sometimes the only response. A dead bear is revered as it is treated for eating, with the reminder that reverence is not enough. There is loss. There is loneliness. There is darkness. But also, there is beauty and there is a sense of coming out the other end intact. Survival is a song that Wisniewski sings, celebrating what there is to celebrate in the face of grief.
