Susan Harvey’s Colloquies is an ongoing conversation with farmers and thinkers about the land she and her husband are struggling to tame in California. The text is broken up by three images, retablos, of San Ysidro, the patron saint of farmers. Harvey’s poetry, combined with her scholarship, weaves easily throughout the manuscript. Colloquies is a rich, many-layered meditation and a very lively one.
