Love and water mark the four stories in this collection. Jiro, the young taxi driver in “Plum Rain” picks up dead souls on rainy nights and tries to help them find their way to another life. In “Bedlam” a distraught woman near the end of a love affair depicts the bed she has so deliriously shared with her lover as an ocean now run dry, while the couple in “Runner” make love on the rainy afternoon before the day of their marriage. In the title story “Carried Away” a retired Belfast teacher takes a holiday at an Asian beach resort where love is for sale in much the same way as the beer in the bar she frequents.
